40 Leaders Under Forty

Dr. Sokonie Siah Reed is an assistant professor of nursing at Bradley University, instructing students in both the classroom and clinical settings. The first African American to earn three degrees from Bradley while maintaining a full-time teaching assignment, she blends the roles of leader, nurse educator and community volunteer in seamless fashion. As a former travel nurse, Dr. Reed draws upon her diverse experience in medical-surgical, oncology and orthopedic care, in both long-term and acute care settings, to provide a comprehensive picture of nursing care and leadership. She has also been a nurse supervisor at Kindred Hospital in Peoria since 2012.

Within Bradley University, Dr. Reed has served as junior-level coordinator and alumni liaison for the Department of Nursing. She is a faculty advisor for the Nurses Christian Fellowship organization, helping to facilitate various community projects, including fundraising for local food pantries. She also serves as a global medical training advisor, helping students who travel overseas to provide healthcare, and as faculty advisor for the Theta Epsilon chapter of Delta Sigma Theta. She helped organize a day of service for the sorority’s Peoria Alumnae chapter, in cooperation with Hand Up Peoria, providing food to over 250 community members.

Over the past year, Dr. Reed has served as a mentor for T.H.I.N.K. Academy, conducting monthly sessions for high school girls focused on academic and life skills development. She has also been a mentor for middle school girls through the Delta Academy, an organization sponsored by Delta Sigma Theta’s Peoria Alumnae chapter. A volunteer nurse for South Side Mission, Dr. Reed has presented and led various discussions on the topic of HIV awareness, and was recently appointed to serve on the Peoria City/County Board of Health. She is a member of the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society for Nursing, Epsilon Epsilon chapter, as well as the Phi Kappa Psi Honor Society. PM
