Community Impact

Mission
The Peoria Humane Society is dedicated to creating a humane environment for animals and humans. We are focused on ending pet overpopulation, cruelty and neglect to animals in addition to promoting respect and kindness to all through education and public awareness.

Vision
Helping People, Help Animals

For more than 80 years, the Peoria Humane Society has remained steadfast in its commitment to animals and people in the Peoria community. The PHS understands the human-animal bond is strong and believes that pets are part of the family. Now more than ever, people need the love and companionship their pet provides.

The Peoria Humane Society supports animals and people through the following programs:

Shelter Support
PHS manages a volunteer program to enhance the lives of animals at Peoria County Protection Services; funds the rehabilitation of sick and injured shelter animals; helps transport dogs, cats, rabbits, farm animals, and wildlife to other animal welfare groups, donates equipment and supplies when PCAPS has a need, and supports foster homes caring for shelter animals waiting to be adopted by supplying food, medical care, and supplies.

Low Cost Spay/Neuter
PHS helps to fund a low-cost spay and neuter program for residents of Peoria County to reduce the number of unwanted cats and dogs.

Pet Therapy
The Paws 4 Therapy program provides support for the elderly, disabled and young through visits to area hospitals, long term healthcare facilities, schools, and residential locations. Paws to Read is a reading-to-dogs program that visits schools and libraries to promote the benefits of reading.

Animal Resource Library
The PHS Education Center is home to a unique and comprehensive animal resource library aimed at upholding the core values of respect, responsibility, peace and kindness. Visitors are encouraged to engage in animal welfare through meetings, lunch & learns, community service, and educational programs in a spacious conference room.

Public Awareness
PHS is committed to bringing awareness to issues of animal cruelty and neglect, proper pet care, and the problems surrounding pet overpopulation through billboards, social media and community outreach events.

Emergency Assistance
PHS focuses on keeping pets with their families by providing support to community animals in need of medical care, food and pet supplies.

Youth Education
PHS nurtures a love for animals through several programs. Paws to Read is a reading-to-dogs program that visits local schools and libraries. Summer Story Time is an interactive time of stories, crafts, snacks and fun with animal friends. Be Kind to Animals Poster Contest is offered for students in our partner schools. Kids & Critters Camp is a summer camp for 5th grade through high school age youth where kids spend time with shelter animals. Kindhearted Kids is a program focused on developing appreciation for people, animals and the environment.
