Dr. Bhavana Kandikattu is a pediatric hospitalist, newborn hospital attending physician and pediatric sedation specialist, responsible for the care of hospitalized children and newborn infants at Children’s Hospital of Illinois. She is also director of the Pediatric Residency Program at UICOMP, where she oversees 30 pediatric residents and serves as assistant professor of clinical pediatrics.

Having started her medical career as a pediatric resident in 2005, Dr. Kandikattu joined UICOMP as pediatric sub-internship clerkship director for fourth-year medical students, working to recruit promising pediatric candidates to Peoria. In this role, she developed a unique curriculum for assessing the clinical examination techniques of medical students, which earned her a Curriculum Innovation award in 2011. The following year, she was named pediatric inpatient education director.

In 2013, Dr. Kandikattu completed the Caterpillar Faculty Scholars Fellowship and presented her research at several national conferences, taking second place at the UICOMP Research Symposium. As associate program director of the Pediatric Residency Program, she enhanced the exposure of research for pediatric residents, resulting in more than 40 abstracts presented over the last year at local, regional, national and international levels—unprecedented in the program’s history.

A member of the American Academy of Pediatrics and Association of Pediatric Program Directors, Dr. Kandikattu chairs a wide range of committees—including the Pediatric Executive Council, Curriculum Committee, Milestone Evaluation Committee, Pediatric Leadership Council and the Education Directors Committee—and sits on many others—including the Pediatric Department Executive Committee, Children’s Hospital of Illinois Quality and Safety Committee, Clinical Task Force Committee, Program Directors Roundtable Council and the Graduate Medical Education Council.

Outside of the healthcare arena, she is a volunteer for the India Association of Peoria and the PTO at Hickory Grove Elementary School, chairing its culture fair last year. She also serves as den mother for her son’s Boy Scout troop and a mentor for young girls at the Hindu Temple of Central Illinois. A talented artist, she enjoys painting, cartooning and reading in her spare time. iBi
