Daniel Mariscal is an at-large trustee for the Village of Peoria Heights, accountable to its 6,000-plus residents and responsible for formulating policy and enacting local laws; developing, approving and managing the village’s operating and capital budgets; administering 42 full- and part-time employees; and voting on issues concerning economic development and revitalization, the appointment of non-elected officials, public safety, road improvements and property conditions. He also serves as chairman of the village’s Economic and Community Development Committee.

In 2014, Mariscal approached the Richwoods Township Supervisor to propose the creation of an unpaid internship that would address citizen needs, while imparting a practical knowledge of township government. He became the inaugural Richwoods Township intern—and his outstanding work in that capacity led his superior to encourage him to run for the Peoria Heights Village Board. Elected within months of his college graduation, he became the youngest person ever to be elected in the village’s 119-year history, and the first Latino to sit on the board.

Since assuming office, Mariscal has been instrumental in a number of significant projects. He helped establish the Tax Increment Financing (TIF) district that brought Trefzger’s Bakery to the village; spearheaded the acquisition of property now being developed into a three-story, brick-and-glass building for mixed retail, restaurant and office space; and drafted the proposal for a 36-unit, upscale apartment complex now underway. He also assisted in the formation of the Business Development District Advisory Committee, and a new partnership with Bradley University’s Turner Center for Entrepreneurship and a panel of local business leaders to optimize the village’s economic development.

Mariscal is vice president of the Peoria Heights Suburban Lion’s Club and an elected Republican Precinct Committeeman for the 18th Congressional District. In addition to serving as an advisor to political campaigns at the municipal, county, state and federal levels, he has been a volunteer and legal assistant for Prairie State Legal Services and an election judge for the Peoria County Election Commission. iBi
