40 Leaders Under Forty

As director of programming for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Peoria, Chanel Hargrave-Murry leads strategic oversight and direction of a team implementing a high-quality youth development program in the Peoria area. Leveraging her expertise in community service, the arts, racial equity, trauma-informed practice and instructional design, she works to ensure a holistic approach to driving positive youth outcomes by identifying best practices to address and improve social determinants of health; leading the development of program curricula and content; and providing training and technical assistance to support program implementation. In this role, she oversees a range of strategic partnerships, manages a multi-million-dollar portfolio of public and private-sector contracts, and supports fundraising efforts for the local and national organization.

In addition to her work for the Boys & Girls Clubs, Hargrave-Murry participates in numerous other efforts to make a positive impact in her community. As president of the Young Professionals Committee through the Tri-County Urban League, Hargrave-Murry leads a committee of young professionals to collaborate on ideas, fundraisers and special events. She sits on the Peoria NAACP’s Executive Committee and serves as chairperson for the newly re-established Women in NAACP (WIN) Committee, advocating for significant issues affecting women and children. She also serves as the Fourth District representative for the City of Peoria’s Advisory Committee on Police-Community Relations.

Earlier this year, Hargrave-Murry served as a member of the committee that planned the successful Juneteenth event at John H. Gwynn Jr. Park in Peoria—the first celebration of the new federal holiday celebrating African-American culture and commemorating the emancipation of African-American slaves. She has also collaborated with distributors to bring food boxes to the east and south ends of the city, helping to feed more than 300 families. PM
