It’s our last issue of 2016… hard to believe another year has gone by already! All through the year, our readers took art & society around the world, sending back pictures of themselves reading the magazine on their travels. All this fun has me asking: Where will you take it in 2017?

A few weeks ago, I had the privilege of joining a Peoria delegation to visit our German sister city in Friedrichshafen. One evening we were treated to a private dinner cruise on Lake Constance aboard the historic royal steamship Hohentwiel. When one of our hosts invited me to the front of the ship—adding that it’s “kind of like going to the front of the Titanic”—I couldn’t help but laugh, knowing that back in Peoria, our team was working on a story involving the famous steamship, which sunk the year before the Hohentwiel was built.

With Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition set to open at the Peoria Riverfront Museum on November 12th, we asked museum staff about what it takes to host such a sprawling display. Go here for their behind-the-scenes reflections—and don’t miss the exhibit, which runs through next March.

In the meantime, our thoughts turn to the holiday season—my favorite time of the year. Believe it or not, last year was my first visit to Kightlinger Antiques, featured prominently on our cover. Walking through this winter wonderland—featuring some 140,000 ornaments on display—brings a smile to my face, as I reminisce of the days and years gone by.

In this issue, we take a look at the Broadway Lounge—an intimate downtown venue with a slate of holiday offerings to round out the year—while my friend Norma Rossi recounts her experience traveling to Cuba—“an eight-day introduction to a most amazing people and their island nation.” Take our fun (local) holiday quiz and as always, don’t forget to look for yourself in our social scenes!

As another year comes to a close, please join me in giving thanks for friends and family, and for the many cultural amenities we are fortunate to have here in Peoria. And when you travel, don’t forget to take art & society along with you—and share your memories with us! a&s
