On Friday, March 27th, the Junior League of Peoria and the Hotel Père Marquette will welcome platinum recording artists Squirrel Nut Zippers to Peoria to perform at the fourth annual Hotel Père Marquette Charitable Gala.
“The Père Marquette has participated in so many little events for the community, they wanted to do something more targeted and focused,” said General Manager Bill Carter. By donating its facility and amenities, the Pere Marquette, with the help of the Community Foundation of Central Illinois, has recognized and supported one local not-for-profit group each year for the past four years with this gala event.
This year’s honoree, the Junior League of Peoria, was established in 1936 and is comprised of women volunteers who impact the community in various capacities. The Junior League has been committed to achieving success and excellence by bringing people together to improve the quality of family life in our region.
The Junior League of Peoria is currently taking on one of its biggest projects, the Peoria PlayHouse—a hands-on, interactive children’s museum that will be housed in the Glen Oak Pavilion. This project strives to make our community a place where children learn to love science and technology, and are given the tools to make our community a better place. It also offers an opportunity for children and families to experience the things that make Peoria a special place in which to learn and grow.
Making their debut in Peoria, the Squirrel Nut Zippers found their niche in the late 1990s with the revival of swing music. Founded in 1993, the band was named after the Squirrel candy company’s Nut Zippers, a peanut and caramel candy that’s been around since the mid ‘20s.
