With a mission to improve the lives of homeless cats and reduce feline homelessness, the Daniel J. Elias Memorial Foundation is seeking funds to build Purrsonalities, a nonprofit, progressive cat sanctuary on Peoria’s north side. Educating the public about animal welfare issues with special emphasis on the necessity of spaying and neutering, is also part of the plan.
Purrsonalities, a 3,500-square-foot, state-of-the-art facility will become a safe, healthy environment for 50 cats and kittens who await adoption. Designed by nationally known architect William Meade, the sanctuary will follow strict guidelines to prevent disease transmission between cats. Given plenty of space, most cats will live with four or five feline companions in community rooms with screened-in porches that open to an enclosed courtyard accessible by visitors and volunteers. Cats who prefer human companionship will have their own kitty condos. Volunteers will improve the adoptability of the animals by implementing behavioral techniques in the sanctuary.
Most cats and kittens will come to Purrsonalities from PAWS, the Peoria County animal control agency and shelter. There are plans to work with all area animal welfare organizations and veterinarians to open a low-cost spay and neuter clinic within the sanctuary. The success of this venture will depend on community funding and the willingness of local veterinarians to participate.
