Dr. Asim Jaffer is a physician at Methodist Family Medical Center and associate director of the family medicine residency at the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Peoria (UICOMP). As a family medical physician, Dr. Jaffer meets the primary care needs of patients of all ages and precepts several medical procedures at Methodist.

At UICOMP, he directs the inpatient medicine curriculum, serving as the point of contact for resident physicians as they care for adult inpatients at Methodist. He also develops the Management of Health Systems curriculum and teaches residents about the impact of the Patient Protection & Affordable Care Act (PPACA).

In the arena of healthcare reform, Dr. Jaffer has shared his perspective as a physician and educator in the planning and implementation of the PPACA at the state and national levels. In 2009, he met with Sen. Dick Durbin and other legislators at the Family Medicine Congressional Conference, where he reviewed legislation and offered suggestions on healthcare reform and delivery. He also testified before the Governor’s Council for Healthcare Reform Implementation at Illinois Central College.

Dr. Jaffer was a driving force in the creation of Methodist Palliative Care Services and has served as medical director of the Methodist First Call phone line for three years. He is one of three collaborating physicians for the Methodist In-School Health program, where he helps provide on-site access to nurse practitioners and brings resident physicians into District 150 classrooms through “Ask-a-Doctor” sessions. He also shares his experience on the following teams and committees at Methodist: Acute Care Interdisciplinary Team, Methodist Cancer Institute, Methodist Cancer Committee, Performance Improvement Committee, Retention and Recruitment Committee, and Patient Centered Medical Home Committee.

Dr. Jaffer is active in the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) and Illinois Academy of Family Physicians, serving on its board of directors. He co-convened the delegation to the 2011 AAFP National Conference for Special Constituencies, and was later elected to the AAFP Congress of Delegates. iBi
