Picasso had it. So did Edison, Einstein and da Vinci. In fact, about 15 to 20 percent of the population is believed to have some of the symptoms of dyslexia: slow or inaccurate reading, poor spelling, poor writing and mixing up similar words. While there is no cure, dyslexic individuals can learn to read and write with appropriate education or treatment.

Founded in 2014, the Peoria-based Dyslexia Awareness Network (DAN) works to improve the lives of those with dyslexia and related learning disabilities using a proven approach that teaches reading the way children and individuals actually learn. In partnership with teachers, parents and other experts, DAN strives to eliminate educational inequities and create excellent learning opportunities for all students.

The organization holds monthly meetings at the Peoria Public Library North Branch; the next takes place on August 23, 2017 at 6:30pm. Learn more at dyslexiaawarenessnetwork.org or by calling (309) 679-0788.
