Improving lives by bringing pets and people together.
For over 20 years, we have provided animals with loving medical care, socialization and adoption. We work to know our animals, their health, behaviors, preferences and sociability. This allows us to work honestly and cooperatively with adopters to create forever homes. We have two adoption programs.
The Pets for Saving Program creates forever homes for cats and dogs of all ages and people 21 years of age and older with approved applications. Some animals need to be the only pet; some are bonded to a sibling and need to be adopted together; others need a quiet environment and still others need lots of activity and attention. By observing and working with our animals, we learn about their habits and needs and match them to the right home.
The Pets for Seniors Program matches older animals with senior citizens to promote the health and happiness of both. Pets who are seven or older and people who are 60 and older are eligible for this program. The companionship and responsibility of adopting a pet can be beneficial to seniors. Not only do they have the company of a loving companion, but it keeps them active, thinking and needed.
Through this program we provide lower adoption fees and assistance to seniors who may need a little help as pet adopters. We also can provide temporary respite care should the adopter be hospitalized or in rehabilitation care. Our goal is to help maintain the loving relationship through the rough times.
Adopt
Do you have the time and love needed to provide a forever home for a cat or dog who needs you? Go to petsforseniors.org and fill out a no-obligation adoption application by tapping on the Application tab and selecting the adoption form. This helps us get to know you and the type of animal that interests you.
Foster
Perhaps you want to help an animal but can’t make a lifetime commitment. When you foster an animal, you temporarily supply the care and love an animal needs while we find its forever home. We provide food, litter, etc. Interested in learning more? Call us or go to petsforseniors.org and fill out a no-obligation foster application. You can find it under the Application tab.
Volunteer
There are a number of ways to volunteer with Pets for Seniors.
- Volunteer at our Shelter – Our volunteers provide for our animals and adopters in a variety of ways including cleaning, socializing, transporting animals, preparing newsletters, and more. To explore the opportunities, call (309) 446-9721 or email [email protected].
- Volunteer at our Forever Home Resale Shop – Our shop is staffed completely by volunteers, and all profits go to support our shelter. You can help us by staffing the store, sorting donations or providing quality donations to the shop. For more information, contact Arlene at (309) 868-7543.
- Help with fundraising by working with our director. We need people to help plan our fundraising events, assist with event promotion, and help with the event itself.
How to Help
Donations are vital to PFS Shelter. They allow us to sustain our operating budget so we can continue to adopt more pets into loving homes. Our adoption fees don’t begin to cover the cost of care for our animals—especially our beloved older animals. We spay or neuter all adoptable animals, provide necessary vaccinations and medicines, ensure proper veterinary care and microchip for permanent identification. We also spread the word about our shelter and the importance of adopting homeless pets.
We cannot do all of this without our wonderful volunteers and donors. To donate, you may send a check to P.O. Box 9486, Peoria, IL 61612 or donate by credit card via our website. You can make a one-time donation, become a monthly donor, or make a donation in honor or in memory of a loved one. You might even consider planned or legacy giving.
