Community Impact

Mission
The Salvation Army, an international movement, is an evangelical part of the universal Christian church. Its message is based on the Bible. Its ministry is motivated by the love of God. Its mission is to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and to meet human needs in His name without discrimination.

The Salvation Army in Peoria provides a multitude of programs designed to meet the needs of the most vulnerable in our area.

Please note: The Salvation Army continues to follow Covid-19 guidelines on social distancing which impacts how we are able to provide some of our services.

Shelter
The Salvation Army provides two shelter programs in Peoria. Our Family Shelter houses single women and intact families. Utilizing our Pathway of Hope social services model, we work to help individuals and families overcome barriers such as unemployment and unstable housing to help break the cycle of poverty.

Our Safety Net program serves homeless men—the largest segment of the local homeless population. Clients receive shelter, meals and access to laundry services. Clients have the opportunity to work one-on-one with case managers to develop their life skills, and seek assistance with jobs and housing.

Feeding Programs
The Salvation Army offers free “to-go” lunches each weekday at the Family Services Center through our Lunch with Love program (417 NE Adams Street). These free meals are designed to provide the homeless and economically disadvantaged a nutritious meal. The evening meal, Dinner with Love, is offered to our homeless shelter residents through the generous support of our community volunteers, including area individuals, churches and restaurants. We also have an emergency food pantry providing those in need a parcel of groceries that will offer a family of four enough food for three days.

Veterans Services
Our Veterans Outreach Center provides valuable networking services for veterans. Through our Supportive Services for Veterans and their Families (SSVF) Program, we assist with housing costs and other veteran benefits.

Child Care Center
We have one of the longest continuously-run child care centers in Peoria. We offer a creative, Christian-based curriculum for children six weeks to five years old. The center is accredited through the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) and we have earned a Gold Circle of Quality with the Illinois Quality Rating Program, ExceleRate Illinois.

Corps Community Center
Our Corps Community Center, the Peoria Citadel, at 2903 W. Nebraska Avenue is home to a variety of youth programs, including the Academy of Performance Arts, where area children get music and arts instruction free of charge. The Peoria Citadel offers character-building programs for grade school and high school youth throughout the year.  The Peoria Citadel also provides a food pantry on Wednesdays and Fridays from 9 am to 12 pm.
